Name Splitter turning a Full Name column into First Name and Last Name columns

Full Name in, First and Last out

CRM imports want First Name and Last Name; forms and exports hand you one Full Name column. Splitting looks trivial until the real names arrive: Doe, Jane, Dr. Jane Q. Doe, John Smith, Jr., Ana de la Cruz. This tool handles those patterns — honorifics peel off the front, generational and credential suffixes off the back, comma order flips, and surname particles stay with the last name.

Flagged, not guessed

No rule set splits every name correctly — naming conventions differ across cultures, and a single word like Cher has no "last name" to find. Rather than guess, the tool flags those rows for review. That review-before-apply habit is the whole CleanSmart model: every change a pass makes is staged for your approval before you export. The import checker then verifies the split file is ready for your platform.

Frequently asked questions

What name formats does it understand?

Jane Doe, Doe, Jane, Dr. Jane Q. Doe, John Smith, Jr., and surnames with particles like Ana de la Cruz (the whole de la Cruz stays in Last Name). Honorifics and suffixes are recognized with or without dots.

What happens to names it can't split?

Single-word names get the word as First Name and a single_name flag in the issues report, so you can review them instead of trusting a guess. Blank cells stay blank.

Can I keep the middle name, prefix, and suffix?

Yes — turn on Include prefix/middle/suffix columns. By default only First Name and Last Name are added, which is what most CRM imports want.

Is splitting names really this hard?

Genuinely, yes — naming conventions differ across cultures, and no rule set gets every name right. That's why this tool flags what it isn't sure about, and why a serious cleanup reviews changes before applying them, the way every CleanSmart pass stages its changes for your review.
