What you'll need

  • A CleanSmart account with integration permissions
  • A Mailchimp account (any tier, including free)
  • A Mailchimp API Key — find it under Account & Billing → Extras → API Keys

2

Generate a Mailchimp API Key

In Mailchimp, click your account avatar (top right) → Account & BillingExtrasAPI KeysCreate A Key. Give it a name like "CleanSmart" and copy the generated key.

Tip: Mailchimp API Keys follow the format xxxxxxxx-us##. Note the datacenter suffix (e.g., us14) — CleanSmart needs it to route API calls correctly.
3

Paste the API key and connect

Enter your Mailchimp API key into the field in the integration card and click Connect. CleanSmart validates the key and lists your available audiences. A green confirmation message indicates a successful connection.

4

Select an audience and map fields

Choose which audience list to import. CleanSmart auto-detects field types (email, first name, last name, phone, tags) and suggests a mapping. Confirm the mapping and click Import.

Your audience appears as a data source

After importing, your Mailchimp audience is available in CleanSmart. Run the cleaning pipeline on it, review changes in the Review & Resolve queue, then export or push the clean data back to Mailchimp.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import multiple Mailchimp audiences?

+
Yes. After connecting with your API key, you can import any or all of your audiences as separate data sources in CleanSmart. Each runs as an independent cleaning job.

My API key isn't being accepted. What should I check?

+
Verify the key is copied in full, including the datacenter suffix (e.g., -us14). Also check that the key is active in Mailchimp's API Keys settings — keys can be disabled without being deleted.

Can I push cleaned data back to Mailchimp?

+
Yes. After reviewing changes, use the Export step to push the cleaned audience back to Mailchimp. CleanSmart updates existing records — it doesn't create duplicate contacts in Mailchimp.

How do I revoke CleanSmart's access?

+
Delete or disable the API key in Mailchimp's API Keys settings. You can also remove the connection from CleanSmart's Import & Sync settings. Either approach immediately ends access.

Will cleaning affect my Mailchimp tags or segments?

+
No. Tags, segments, and campaign history in Mailchimp are not modified by CleanSmart. The cleaning pipeline only updates field values (names, phones, addresses) and merges duplicate records — segment membership follows the merged record.
